Week 1 Intervention

Understanding the trail

This week Campbell, Blake and I had a brief look around the area of Bunya to decide what trail we were going to do. We decided to choose trail 3 because it had a combination of uphill and a little bit of downhill. This meant that Blake could use some of his momentum built up from the downhill to power up the hills. Also, the uphill some nice challenging roots and rocks to go over which requires more power.

Week 1 went pretty well. The overall time it took for Blake to do trail 3 was 15:05. This is a good time to work with and by the end of week 6 we should be able to see a massive improvement. There were a lot of the uphill parts where he had to walk which takes longer then riding, therefore we should see a big improvement in those sections by week 6 as he will hopefully be able to ride up them.

I personally felt really happy for Blake because he gave it a go and put 100% effort into it. One thing that I think will help him get better mentally is his confidence in riding. There were bits where he got a little freaked out because there were rocky/wooden structures and not just dirt. For me, I think of these things as a dirt hill and this personally helps me conquer going over/going down these structures.

Client Feedback:

How did you think you went?

I think I didn’t do very well and I could definitely improve.

What did you enjoy about this week?

I enjoyed the downhill segments.

What didn’t you enjoy?

Uphill and rooty bits.

What do you want to improve on?

I want to improve my actual leg strength and improve my ability to go uphill.

Overall, I think that our first intervention was successful this week because we got a time that gives us a starting point to work towards, some uphill sections that we can work on to be able to conquer them and some good photos of him. I am really excited to see the end result after doing the intervention program on Blake.

For next week, we will need to change into training mode. This will require a lot of fitness based activities. Our main focus will be on riding up hills which will build up his leg strength so that he will be able to get up those hills on trail 3. I will also try to change Blake’s mindset to think confidently when doing something out of his comfort zone.
